AAH Student Conference in Conference London 1999
Eleventh Conference on Research-in-Progress, Birkbeck College, University of London, Saturday 13 November, 1999.
- Susan Moroney, University of Liverpool, "Port Erin": In 1938 William Hoggatt, an artist living in the Isle of Man exhibited a picture of Port Erin Bay at the Royal Academy. Soon after the outbreak of war the Isle of Man became host to 'enemy aliens'. Port Erin was used as an Internment Camp for women and children. As a result of research to discover what art, if any, was produced within this camp, I have been able to reconstruct some aspects of the life led by these women in Port Erin. This paper will discuss the outcome of research generated by this picture and questions still to be answered.
- Mike Walsh, "C.R.W. Nevinson and British Futurism": This paper focuses on the years 1912-1916 and so observes the transition of peace-time to war-time Fururism and thus theory into practice. The paper aims to be a positive study of Futurism and discusses amongst other things, Nevinson's Slade paintings, his friendship with Severini and Marinetti and the Futurist exhibitions.
- Vicki Kirkman, University of Liverpool, "Appropriating Constructivism": Since the late 1960s historiographies of the 1920s Soviet avant-gardes have been characterised in the West by a 'correction' of prevailing falsified histories, and from a Soviet perspective, by the 'recovery' of a 'lost' avant-garde. This paper explores another trend that has emerged during the period of postmodenity, which frequently appropriates Constructivism, especially photography, film and design, with little or unusual contextualisation.
