The University of Plymouth are awarding up to four full-time PhD studentships to commence on 1 October 2010. The awards will pay Home/EU fees and a stipend for a total of 36 months. Opportunities for teaching or other relevant experience in higher education will be available to successful candidates, but the award is not dependent on your willingness to gain such experience.

The John Fleming Travel Award is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students studying art, art history, visual culture or architecture. The aim of the award is to encourage a better understanding and exploration of the arts from around the world by enabling students to travel as a means of assisting or furthering their research. The John Fleming Travel Award is sponsored by Laurence King Publishing who offer this award of £2000 annually in memory of the art historian John Fleming, co-author with Hugh Honour, of the book, A World History of Art.

Residential Awards 2010–11 for Research in the Archaeology, History, Art History, Society and Culture of Italy from Prehistory to the Modern Period
Applications are invited for a number of residencies at the British School at Rome. These awards, tenable for three or nine months, give scholars at different stages of their careers a valuable opportunity to pursue their research in Rome. They offer accommodation, board and a research grant.

The Terra Foundation for American Art is offering, in partnership with The Courtauld Institute of Art, London, the Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art, Paris, the John F. Kennedy Institut für Nordamerikastudien, Freie Universität, Berlin, and the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte, Munich, six travel grants for researchers whose research project concerns American art or transatlantic artistic relations prior to 1980. Nationals of all European countries as well as foreign nationals enrolled in European universities can apply for these grants according to their level of study.

Terra Summer Residency
Giverny, France

The Terra Summer Residency in Giverny provides the opportunity to pursue individual study and research in a community of peers while being mentored by senior artists and scholars. Ten residential fellowships are awarded to artists and scholars from the United States and Europe. Fellowships are awarded to artists who have completed their studies at the Masters level and pre-doctoral students at an advanced stage of research and writing on American art or transatlantic artistic exchange. Each candidate must be nominated by a professor at an academic institution. Terra Summer Residency fellows are awarded a stipend of $5,000 and artists receive an additional $200 for the purchase of materials.

Independent Members of the AAH* who are session convenors or who have had a paper or a poster accepted, can apply for a grant of up to £300 to cover some of the expenses of attending the conference. For an application form please contact ch-indeps@aah.org.uk
*Independent members must not have a full-time or near full-time employment within a single institution. They should have declared themselves as independent AAH members when joining/renewing. They must have been a paid-up AAH member for a full year prior to submitting an application.
