Conference: The Church Monuments Society Symposium

Posted on Monday, 29th March 2010

'Making Monuments'
Winchester
10th-12th September 2010

The Church Monuments Society 2010 Symposium theme is enshrined in the title Making Monuments and it sets out to examine the practical issues which have influenced the form and design of monuments. Aspects to be explored include the way monuments have been constructed, the choices of materials, the carving properties of those materials, surface finishes, the siting of monuments and the way they have been used. These aspects have never before been considered together and the weekend should provide new insights into the reasons why monuments appear as they do. This is an interdisciplinary event, bringing together art historians, conservators, archaeologists and practising sculptors.

Winchester Cathedral and its wealth of monuments will be a significant resource during the event. On Friday afternoon there will be a selection of conducted tours aimed at introducing participants to the many facets of this important building. The Saturday afternoon specialist tours will be led by Symposium speakers who will using the Cathedral monuments to illustrate many aspects of this subject.

The Symposium venue will be the three star Winchester Royal Hotel which is situated conveniently in the centre of the City centre only a short walk from the Cathedral. The original property was built in the 15th Century as a private residence and retains much atmosphere. Accommodation is in modern en suite rooms. There is ample private parking and the meeting rooms available to us mean that we will be able to hold a small exhibition of relevant material. We hope that there will also be an opportunity to examine and purchase a selection of new and second hand books provided by specialist dealers.

If you wish to attend the Symposium, please complete the booking form at http://churchmonumentssociety.org/CMS_Events.html and post it, together with you remittance, to the Symposium Organisers, Brian & Moira Gittos, at 4, Linden Road Yeovil Somerset, BA20 2 BH.
