Call for Papers: ‘The Representation of Adolescence in Early Modern Europe’, University of Cambridge

Posted on Wednesday, 10th March 2010

Call for papers from graduate students only.

One-day conference on ‘The Representation of Adolescence in Early Modern Europe’, Department of History of Art, University of Cambridge, 24 September 2010.

There has been much debate in recent years on child and family portraiture in early modern Europe, as well as on the visual construction of women as mothers/wives, and of men in the role of pater familias. The representation of those who are not children nor yet fully adult, however, has been largely lost in the void between discussions of child and adult relationships. This conference aims to explore the many codes of representation which were used to address the transitory state between childhood and adulthood in the early modern period. To what extent did artists or patrons recognise or formulate a pre-adult identity? How were visual languages conceived, appropriated or modified to explore this interstitial stage of development? What responses did images of pre-adulthood elicit? By exploring these and other issues, the conference hopes to raise questions about an important generational group which is both recurrent and strangely voiceless in the history of art.

Confirmed speakers:
Professor Marcia Pointon
Dr Catharine MacLeod
Dr Rosalind P. Blakesley

The conference organisers would like to include papers by graduate students, as well as established scholars. Students wishing to offer a paper are invited to send a 300-word abstract, together with institutional affiliation and a brief biography, to both of the conference organisers by 1 April 2010.
