Call for papers - II CCC – Conference on the Convent of Christ. MONASTIC EQUIPMENT AND SPIRITUAL PRACTICE

Posted on Wednesday, 14th June 2017

The International Conference Monastic Equipment and Spiritual Practice, aims to bring together the researchers interested in (re)thinking the space once inhabited by monastic communities, as well as the tools and strategies that shaped monasteries as a whole. The proposals are welcome to approach specifically but not exclusively the case of the Convent of Christ and the military orders.

12th and 13th October, Convent of Christ, Tomar, Portugal.

One of the ruling guidelines of this meeting will be the discussion regarding the models applied by religious orders in pursuance of the formulation of their own spatial strategies, as well as the supposed identity of their options. Additionally, we aim to promote reflection upon the seemingly stable nature of the objects planned to integrate and activate each monastic space.

The II CCC (Conference on the Convent of Christ) is organized respecting three main themes:

I – The Devotional Space

Church and liturgy: space and its reciprocity with liturgical objects

II – Ordination, Rule and Space

Monastic spaces and their relation with the obedience to the Rule; circulation and efficacy in the fruition of space.

III – Daily Life and Privacy

The infirmary, the dormitory or the enclosure: health, rest, and leisure.

Please send abstracts of no more than 400 words (20 min. presentation) and a short biographical note (300 words) to no later than July 7th, 2017. Abstracts and papers may be presented in Portuguese, Spanish, English and French.

All participants will be notified by the end of July, with the immediate communication of the provisional programme.
