Collaborations: in conversation with John Christie

Posted on Thursday, 23rd August 2012

2012 marks the 40th Anniversary of two of John Berger’s major works: the novel G, winner of the Booker and James Tait Black Memorial Prizes, and the collaborative SFTA/BAFTA-winning BBC TV series and book Ways of Seeing. In celebration, the Centre for Life-writing Research at King's College London, and the Department of English and Drama at the British Library - home, since 2009, to the major collection of Berger’s papers - are holding a series of events, including the exhibition John Berger: Art and Property Now (open for the event). As part of the season, Gill Hedley (curator, critic and member of AICA) and the filmmaker, artist and publisher John Christie will hold a conversation to discuss Christie’s collaborations with John Berger.

As a maker of artists’ books since 1975 John Christie has produced more than 20 limited editions for both the renowned Circle Press and his own imprint Objectif. His prints, drawings and artists’ books are in collections worldwide (Tate Gallery, the V & A and MOMA, New York). As a director and cameraman his TV programmes include Another Way of Telling, a BBC series on photography made in collaboration with John Berger and Jean Mohr; Salvage of Soho Photographer, a C4 documentary on John Deakin and First Hand, a series of seven films based on literary manuscripts from the British Library.
