Conference - Design History Society Conference #DHS2017: Making and Unmaking the Environment

The Design History Society Annual Conference 2017 explores how these processes unfold, across timescapes and landscapes, thus opening a new agenda for the field of design history.

Summer School - History of Colour Printing at London Rare Books School 2017

Introducing a new course for LRBS 2017, History of Colour Printing is taught by Dr Elizabeth Savage of the Institute of English Studies. This interdisciplinary, introductory course provides an overview of colour printing techniques in the West from manual techniques c.1400 through the development of chromolithography in the mid-1800s.

Publication - Special Issue on “Documentation as Art Practice in the 1960s”

Bristol Centre for Medieval Studies 2017 Conference

Registration is also now open for Bristol Centre for Medieval Studies 2017 Conference, 'Past Futures: Space and Temporality in the Middle Ages', running Friday 3rd - Saturday 4th March 2017. The final program will be announced in the coming week, and we expect to enjoy papers from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds, including medieval and contemporary literature, media, anthropology, archaeology, theology, and history.

Free event - Talk on 'The Representation of Women in Pre-Raphaelite Art'

An Art Lecture by Nick Nelson - Monday 20th February 2017, 7pm at Thirlestaine Long Gallery, Cheltenham College. This talk aims to explore the fascinating topic of the representation of women in Pre-Raphaelite art, from the subservient anabolic woman, to the catabolic femme fatale; in particular the theme of the fallen woman and unrequited love, drawing parallels with earlier and more contemporary literature, as well as relating the theme to prostitution during the Victorian epoch.

Study day - Liu Dan: New Landscapes and Old Masters

The Study Day explores Chinese contemporary ink painting and in particular the paintings of the artist Liu Dan which are on display in the Ashmolean Museum until the 26 February. Topics covered include the materials Liu Dan uses and the signification of his calligraphic inscriptions.
