Fashion, Performance and Performativity

Andrea Kollnitz, Stockholm University,
Marco Pecorari, Parsons The New School, Paris,

Since their beginnings, art and fashion have continuously met in the area of the performative – from the fashioning of identities in portraiture to artistic inspiration for fashion, fashion shows and exhibitions. Recent developments have seen an increasing interaction of art and fashion in different kinds of performative spaces, from art performances using and negotiating fashion such as Marina Abramovic’s, to avant-gardist fashion shows and performances such as Olivier Saillard’s collaborations with Tilda Swinton. Boundaries between art and fashion are challenged and transgressed on many different arenas of performance. How can we rethink relations between performance and performativity through looking at current phenomena in the art and fashion world and their genre-transgressing approaches? And how can concepts of art and fashion be reconsidered through looking at different kinds of performances?

This panel wants to explore the multiple relationships between fashion, performance and performativity more closely. Except focusing on different cases of contemporary art and fashion performances and reflecting on the concept of performance in diverse contexts, it will also concentrate on the related concept of performativity connected to a multitude of practices emerging in fashion. This panel invites papers on diverse topics such as the staging of identities and gender in art and through fashion; performance and performativity of the body in/through fashion ad art; performances on/of fashion in shows and exhibitions; fashion practices as performance; the performativity of fashion objects and media; innovative theoretical reflections on the inter-disciplinary aspects of performance and performativity in art history and fashion studies.
